Meredith Goes to Guatemala

August 4 to 11, 2018

With its diverse culture, rich Mayan heritage, and historic charm, Guatemala is a breathtaking, unexpected adventure. On this trip, you will taste a delicious sample of what this beautiful country has to offer, from colonial architecture to indigenous traditions and everything in between. After working in a local school, you’ll relax on the shore of the world’s most breathtaking natural wonders, Lago Atitlán.

Saturday, August 4 — Arrival in Guatemala City

Arriving at the Guatemala City airport, you will make your way to your hotel to unpack and settle in. The group will gather for dinner at either the hotel or a nearby restaurant.

Sunday, August 5 — Lago Atitlán

You’ll travel to the stunning Lago Atitlán early in the morning. Upon arrival, you’ll take a lancha (water taxi) across the lake to visit a local community. You’ll explore the town of Santiago and all the cultural experiences it has to offer, perhaps even taking a cooking class.

Monday, August 6 — Lago Atitlán

Today you’ll visit the school you’ll be working in over the next few days in the village of La Puerta Abierta. You’ll observe and learn about the local education firsthand, then spend the afternoon reflecting on what you saw as well as thinking of student activities that connect their lives to math and science.

Tuesday, August 7 — Lago Atitlán

Today you’ll return to La Puerta Abierta and support your local teacher during the day. You’ll have time to discuss your ideas on math and science activities with the local teachers. To complete the day, you’ll enjoy an evening sunset at the lake.

Wednesday, August 8 — Lago Atitlán

You’ll deliver the activities you’ve planned to the students today, giving them new ideas of how to connect math and science to their everyday lives. During the evening, you’ll enjoy a traditional Guatemalan dinner.

Thursday, August 9 — Lago Atitlán

You’ll have one last day of working with the teachers and students of La Puerta Abierta. A group lunch with the teachers will cap off your accomplishments. Enjoy a final poetic sunset reflected on the water.

Friday, August 10 — Antigua

This morning you’ll wake up early and travel to Antigua, Guatemala’s historic capital. You’ll work with local children at an after-school program. At an evening team dinner, you’ll have a chance to embrace all you’ve learned on this trip.

Saturday, August 11 — Departure

With a full heart, you will make your way back to the US today, certain that you will always be welcome to return to this incredible country.
